... I realized something strange happening on the basketball court... when I shoot hoops with our kids I am making on average 4 out of 10 from the college 3 point line... of course, it's easier when no one is guarding me and I have time to set up and shoot... but 4 out of 10 at age almost 46 is most likely better than my peers would do...
It really got me thinking... when I was 20 years younger and 30 years younger I was playing basketball very often and I never shot that well, even in practice... What’s the difference? I think it is one thing... CONFIDENCE... back then I never thought I was capable of making the shot on a consistent basis and probably compared myself to the star on the team, not to my own potential... true story - I had the ball in my hands to shoot the game winning shot in the local league and I passed it to my friend Neil (best friends for over 40 years till today) and he hit the winning shot and I got the winning assist... he didn't understand why I just didn't shoot it myself... CONFIDENCE...
Fast forward to today... I think my self-CONFIDENCE is at an all time high.. I can subconsciously look back on things that I have accomplished (nothing is accomplished without G-d, but I have done my effort along with HIS "Effort"), like marrying the most amazing woman in the world, raising 4 kids, learning Hebrew, Mishnayos, Halacha, living through 9/11, growing a business, etc.. I realize that I can do things so when it comes to something like shooting a ball, I know I can make it and make it often...
As I look to the future of our children G-d Willing, I have to remind myself to constantly point out their victories to instill CONFIDENCE in them... of course, there are setbacks and things don't always go the way we expect, but they can be learning opportunties and within each setback are brights spots to build upon... I never realized the power of CONFIDENCE till I started draining these 3s...
Thank you and many blessings, Moshe
