The Side Benefit of Weights

Updated: 3 days ago

How resistance training builds confidence you can use everywhere

Friends, I want to talk today about an idea connected to using weights.

I am not going to focus on all the usual benefits we already know, like building strength, protecting joints and bones, improving balance and posture, boosting metabolism, and supporting long term health and mobility.

What I do want to talk about is something else. How weights can affect your confidence.

Confidence is a real outcome of strength training

This is something I have seen with other people and in myself. When people work out, especially with weights or even just resistance training, they feel stronger. And that strength often turns into confidence in other areas of life.

So why is this? Why does it translate?

Because it is measurable

My main thought is this. It is measurable, and that matters psychologically.

1. You can measure progress in real time

When you train, you lift heavier weights. Or you do more sets. Or more reps with the same weight.

You are seeing proof that when you work hard at something, when you practice something, you get better at it. That visible improvement builds confidence.

2. You can measure change in your body and in your life

When you look in the mirror, not to be vain, but you start to see changes, even small changes, it is measurable.

We are not talking about looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger or the Hulk.

But you may see more definition. More tone. More strength.

And it is not only the mirror. It shows up in real life.

You move something in the house and you think, wow, I can carry this. I can carry more.

You go ice skating or roller skating and you notice your legs do not hurt after.

You shovel after a big snowfall and you realize you are not wiped out. You have more energy.

That is measurable too.

Measurable progress becomes transferable confidence

When you experience measurable progress in one area, it builds a confidence that becomes transferable.

You start to think, if I can improve here, maybe I can improve somewhere else too.

Now, I am not saying confidence can only come from weight training. Confidence can come from learning, building skills, and mastering a subject.

But today the focus is a specific side benefit of weights.

The side benefit is confidence

Yes, weights give all the regular benefits, strength, better posture, stronger bones, improved balance, injury prevention, and better overall fitness.

But there is also this incredible side benefit. Confidence.

And that confidence matters for everyone.

Young kids doubt themselves. They compare themselves to others, to media, to what they think they should be able to do.

Adults can also become complacent, especially in their forties or fifties, and forget how much they are still capable of.

Then they start lifting, even light weights at first. Little by little, they get stronger, they do more, and they start to realize, I can do more than I thought.

And that attitude can spill over into everything.

A closing thought

Of course, nothing in this world is possible without the HaShem, and nothing in this world is truly accomplished without tefillah.

If a person accomplishes something without tefillah, it is like they are missing the Source, missing the recognition and appreciation of where their koach really comes from.

So I give everyone a bracha.

That they should use weights to be healthier physically. That they should use that strength to serve the HaShem. And that the side benefit should be that they gain confidence in every aspect of their avodas Hashem and in life.
